Discover Your Birthstone: The Meaning of Birth Gemstones by Month

“These gems have life in them: their colors speak, say what words fail of.”
-       George Eliot

Since the dawn of time, we, as a species, have been drawn toward the shimmer and shine of nature’s treasure – gemstones. But we’d argue this attraction goes further than just aesthetics.

Born, much like us, from the universe, these precious stones and crystals share our energy. We feel aligned with them. Within their crystalline structures, we sense powers, traits, and emotions that we see around us and within ourselves. And that’s likely the reason behind birthstones!

What Exactly are Birthstones?

To explain, each month is assigned a birthstone. For some, those born in each  month will possess the qualities of their respective birthstones. For others, they’re the qualities people born that month can most benefit from.

Either way, many people relish in wearing their birthstone, not only for the unique and beautiful style, but also the peace-of-mind and comfort of knowing that a bit of the universe is on their side …

January Birthstone: Garnet
Garnet One Love Charm
Cultures worldwide have prized this sumptuously rich red gemstone. Legends have sprung up around its beauty since 5,000B.C. when it made its first grand appearance during the Bronze Age. Along the way, someone very aptly named the gemstone “granatium,” otherwise known in English as “Pomegranate.” You only need to take one glimpse at the Garnet to understand why.

The color of warmth, it’s no surprise that the Garnet is associated with the heart, blood, and inner life believed to evoke affection, compassion, bonding, and friendship, for anyone who welcomes the gorgeous gemstone into their lives.

February Birthstone: Amethyst
Amethyst One Love Charm
Resplendent with reddish-purple hues, Amethyst is as famed for catching the eye as it is for its cleansing properties. While no one knows precisely when it was first discovered, Amethyst jewelry has been found and dated as early as 2000 BC. Some historical accounts even say that Saint Valentine had an amethyst ring carved with an image of Cupid.
Given that Amethyst is believed to bring about serenity, understanding, and trust – we can see why the patron saint of love and romance might have wanted to call on this precious gemstone's powers.

March Birthstone: Aquamarine (pictured), Bloodstone
Aquamarine One Love Charm
Historically referred to as the “sailor’s stone,” Aquamarine gems are believed to be brimming with the powers and strengths most required at sea - tranquility, serenity, clarity, and harmony. As the first in line of the spring birthstones, the sea-blue crystal represents rebirth and transformation. It also embodies youthful vitality, purity, loyalty, hope, and truth.

And, making the perfect companion to Aquamarine’s soothing energy is bloodstone’s force of perseverance and self-acceptance – a genuine power couple for those lucky enough to be born under a dual-birthstone month!

April Birthstone: Diamond
Diamond One Love Charm
Formed from carbon under pressure and immense heat, the diamond reminds us that there’s often strength at the end of strife. Long leaders or power figures, diamonds have also gained an air of authority and exclusiveness over the ages.

Known as the strongest material on earth, their crystalline surface refuses to crack, making it no surprise that the glistening crystal represents perseverance, eternity, longevity, and long life.

May Birthstone: Emerald
Emerald One Love Charm
The gorgeous velvety green of Emerald has long been considered one of the most fitting and beautiful spring colors. Emerald crystals were mined in Egypt since 330 BC, but some estimate that the most senior among them go back 2.97 billion years. Perhaps the most well-known fan of Emeralds is Cleopatra. She cherished their beauty, even claiming ownership of all emerald mines in Egypt during her reign to presumably gain their powers of romance, hope, and rebirth (alongside the crystal's enchanting appearance!).

June Birthstone: Pearl (pictured), Alexandrite, and Moonstone
Pearl One Love Charm
June's birthstones range from the opalescent pearl to the milky moonstone to the rare, color-changing alexandrite.

The lustrous pearl embodies pride, elegance, confidence, and royalty. Alexandrite, with its ever-changing colors, fittingly lends itself to times of change, creating harmony during times of chaos and soothing worried thoughts. And finally, the moonstone, almost ethereally cloudy-white in appearance, promises prosperity and good fortune on top of it all.

July Birthstone: Ruby
Ruby One Love Charm
Considered by some to be the most precious of the precious gemstones, the Ruby seems to have a natural sway with the heart. Or, perhaps, being associated with the sun, we’re simply drawn to its overwhelming power and life-giving energy.

For the Romans and Greeks, life-giving extended to life-saving, as many soldiers wore the roaring-red crystal into war as a shield, believing it made them invincible. Rubies are also considered to boost concentration, creativity, loyalty, honor, and compassion.

August Birthstone: Peridot (pictured), Spinel, and Sardonyx
Peridot One Love Charm
August is another triple-birthstone month! The mesmerizingly-green peridot birthstone is known for being formed under extreme conditions. It calls hardened lava home, as well as – believe it or not - meteorites that traveled from outer space. Spinel is a hard, glossy, no-fuss gemstone that has no time for ego and symbolizes devotion to others. Sardonyx, a gorgeously lined peachy Persian gemstone, ties together August’s bountiful package of jewels with courage and happiness.

September Birthstone: Sapphire
Sapphire One Love Charm
Sapphire is a celestial-blue gemstone with an all-knowing air. Believed to channel divine favor while bestowing wise judgment on its wearer – it’s the ideal ally for when you need strength on your side. In fact, the Greeks even wore Sapphire when they were in need of guidance.

But not stopping there, Sapphire also proudly boasts connotations of royalty, with a natural talent for attracting abundance, blessings, and gifts.

October Birthstone: Opal (pictured) and Tourmaline
Opal One Love Charm
Opal and tourmaline are both birthstones of October. Together, they are known for their endless color combinations.

Tourmaline gains its name from the Sinhalese word “toramalli,” meaning “stone with mixed colors;" While Opal owes its name to the Latin word “Opalus” which means to “see colors change." The iridescent crystal of tourmaline represents faithfulness and confidence while Opal evokes compassion and unconditional love.

November Birthstone: Topaz (pictured) and Citrine
Topaz One Love Stone
Topaz and iridescent Citrine form a compelling birthstone duo that works beautifully together in a pendant, necklace, or any form of jewelry. But style aside, the combined energy of both gemstones works to attract positive energy, wealth, and abundance (Citrine) while evoking an atmosphere in which love and affection can blossom (Topaz).

December Birthstone: Turquoise (pictured), Zircon, and Tanzanite
Turquoise One Love Charm
December is a month of birthstone abundance – and it’s all blue-hued. To begin with, the blue-green turquoise is primarily regarded as a love charm, also thought to symbolize luck, success, and invulnerability.

Zircon brings meditation and developing psychic intuition to the table, while Tanzanite brings a knack for sound judgment and a well-exercised intuition.
